What are Domains, Hosting, & Content?

When you register a domain (a www. or .com website address) and build a website, you then need to make it live on the web. Hosting is required for all websites to be made live on the world wide web. Hosting is like a rented storage unit on the internet. And just as if you never tell anyone the address of your storage unit, or what’s in it, then most likely no one will ever find out about it. However, unlike a storage unit, we WANT customers to find your stuff. In order for them to do that, your website address and content (text and images on a website) need to be submitted to search engines. Google, Yahoo, and Bing are the most popular search engines. When your website is properly submitted to search engines, people making searches on Google, Yahoo or Bing will be more likely to find your website in search results.

Why are Website Updates Important?

Your website needs to stay fresh and relevant to search engines is because search engines have “spider bots” that crawl the web and check for updated content monthly, biweekly, or weekly, depending on how often we tell search engines to check your website for new content (text and images). If your information is not updated, eventually your website will be pushed out of the way in search results. This allows search engines to show more updated and fresh websites so to users making searches. When you go to Google and enter a search for information, wouldn’t you want accurate info? The same is true for your customers. Content on your website should be fresh and accurate.

A well-maintained website attracts new customers and keeps existing customers coming back for more. Your website should be customer centered and kept relevant by routinely refreshing the content and ensuring that the website is functioning properly and should be ever-improving your website user experience. Routine maintenance includes ensuring that contact forms are working, address and phone number listings across the web are updated, and that products, services and price lists are current and that users are able to get all of the information they require as quickly as possible to streamline your sales process and increase your bottom line.

What is a Search Engine?

Below is an example of the search engine Google, and the results that are ranked (listed) in order of relevancy to the keyword that is typed in. This means that I typed in the keywords “mobile hair makeup los angeles” and Google gave me the results that are most relevant to those words. As you can see from the example, most of the results listed are for “Mobile Beauty By Jamie”. These results show us that Jamie’s website and Yelp are the most relevant listings on Google to “mobile hair makeup los angeles” because they are the first two listings Google shows. We can also see that Jamie’s Facebook Business Page, a magazine article about Jamie’s business, and an online business information directory get listed. The more places your business’s information can be found, the better of a chance you have to catch the eye of customers. This is why it is crucially important to keep your website in favor with search engines.
